Driver in Solo-car Crash on 57 Freeway in Diamond Bar Runs Away; Dies in Accident on Brea Canyon Road
DIAMOND BAR, CA (August 28, 2018) – A driver died after he left a single-car crash in Diamond Bar on the 57 Freeway in the southbound lanes. The Monday accident occurred at roughly 4:40 a.m., said Sarah Ardalani, who is with the coroner’s office.
The victim attempted to hop on a truck, but he fell. He was then hit by a vehicle, authorities believe.
Officer Rodrigo Jimenez with the California Highway Patrol said the driver had been in a Mazda3 on the 57 Freeway. The victim lost control a bit south of Brea Canyon Road, and struck the center divider. The impact caused the vehicle to overturn. The crashed vehicle ended up on the shoulder on the right side of the road.
Jimenez said that the driver ran out of the car as soon as it stopped, and down to Brea Canyon Road. The driver then attempted to enter a parked truck. Inside the truck was the truck’s driver, identified as a man who is a 28-year-old resident of Apple Valley. He had been taking a nap until his wife arrived.
The truck driver, upon hearing some knocking, opened his door. Standing there was a man who said he needed to have a ride to get away from a crash.
According to Jeremy Tolen with California Highway Patrol, the truck driver was scared, said no, and began to drive his vehicle away. The truck driver then heard some pounding on the door on the passenger side. The truck driver continued driving.
Tolen said that the victim mounted the truck as it was moving, and he may have jumped off or fallen off. According to CHP, they are looking into the possibility that the victim was struck by another vehicle. Tolen said they had not found evidence that the truck had hit the victim. The truck’s driver drove onto the 57 Freeway southbound, stopped on the shoulder, and notified 911 operators that a man tried to enter his truck.
Responders who arrived pronounced the victim dead at the accident scene. He was identified as Javier Jose Velasquez Grimaldo, a 24 year old resident of Rowland Heights.
Officials ask that any person who has information about the single car crash on the freeway to call the CHP Baldwin Park area office and ask for Officer C. Banuelos. The number is 626-338-1164.
Officials also that anyone who has information about the accident on Brea Canyon Road call the CHP Santa Fe Springs area office and ask for Officer Justin LeBlanc. The number is 562-868-0503.
