Hit-and-run Collision that Killed Jose Olguin on the 55 Freeway in Costa Mesa Leads to Arrest for Suspected Driver
COSTA MESA, CA (December 6, 2018) – A hit-and-run collision that killed one person in the evening on Tuesday in Costa Mesa led to arrest for the suspected driver. The December 4 accident occurred on the 55 Freeway in the southbound lanes, to the north of Del Mar Avenue.
The time was roughly a bit after 6:00 p.m.
The California Highway Patrol said a vehicle—described as a Honda Accord—had been heading south in the freeway’s fast lane. It crossed over all lanes of traffic, and then the Honda collided with a vehicle in the number 4 lane. The vehicle it collided with was described as a Mini Cooper.
Reports say that the Honda continued to travel right and it collided with another vehicle. The second vehicle was described as a Toyota 4Runner. The second collision site was the offramp for Del Mar Avenue, according to CHP. The Toyota rolled over from the impact from the crash, and its driver was thrown from the vehicle.
California Highway Patrol said the Honda went back to the freeway’s southbound lanes and continued traveling on the 55 Freeway until it exited at the ramp for Victoria Street.
The person who had been driving the Toyota died at the accident scene. The Orange County coroner’s office said the deceased victim was Jose Olguin, a 48-year-old resident of Orange.
The person who had been driving the Honda was detained by Costa Mesa police. He was identified as Bernardo Alvarez Zalpa, a 49 year old. Officers from California Highway Patrol later arrested Zalpa on suspicion of driving under the influence, and hit-and-run, Florentino Olivera said. Olivera is a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol.
