Dump Truck Hits Man in Wheelchair and His Caregiver on Anaheim Avenue in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (May 24, 2019) – A dump truck hit a man in a wheelchair and his caregiver in the afternoon on Wednesday in Costa Mesa. The May 22 incident occurred on Anaheim Avenue, in an area between Plumer Street and 19th Street
The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
Roxi Ryad, who is a spokesperson with the police, said the two people had entered the crosswalk and were hit. No details have been reported on why the crash occurred.
Reports say the man in the wheelchair—identified as 72 years old—suffered injuries that were described as minor. His caregiver—identified as a woman 53 years old and a resident of Anaheim—suffered injuries that were described as serious. Respondents transported her to a hospital. Her condition has been described as critical. The names of the victims have not been reported.
According to reports, the man was also taken to a hospital. His wheelchair was damaged in the incident.
The person who had been driving the truck stayed and the accident site and cooperated with investigators. The identity of the driver, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
