Costa Mesa Crashes at Newport Blvd. and Harbor Blvd. Injures Two; DUI Suspected

COSTA MESA, CA (February 22, 2021) – Early in the morning on Sunday in Costa Mesa, two people were injured in a series of crashes involving a driver suspected of DUI. The February 21 incident occurred on Newport Boulevard where it intersects with Harbor Boulevard.

The time was roughly 2:00 a.m., according to Costa Mesa Police.

A vehicle–which has not been described–had been traveling southbound on Newport Boulevard. According to authorities, the driver went through a light that was red and struck a pedestrian in the area of Harbor Boulevard.

The suspect driver then collided with a vehicle–which has also not been described–at in the Harbor Boulevard area. The suspect driver’s vehicle then overturned.

Responders arrived and transported the injured people to the hospital. Neither the pedestrian, nor the driver of the second vehicle, have been identified in reports, including their names, ages, gender, and cities of residence.

The types of injuries the patients suffered, and their current condition is not known.

Officers with Costa Mesa Police arrested a driver on suspicion of DUI. He was identified as Herman Martinez, a resident of Maywood, 22 years old. Reports say Martinez was not injured in the incident.

Investigators are working to understand the circumstances and factors related to the crash. They are in the process of collecting details and information.
