Crash on 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa Kills One Teenager, Injures Other Teenagers
COSTA MESA, CA (November 23, 2018) – A teenaged boy was killed early in the morning on Thanksgiving Day on the 405 Freeway in Costa Mesa. The November 22 accident occurred when a big rig collided with the vehicle the boy had been traveling in on the freeway’s southbound side. The accident site was close to Harbor Boulevard, the California Highway Patrol said.
The time was roughly 2:00 a.m.
According to reports, the vehicle in which the boy was an occupant had been involved in a prior accident, and was stopped. The driver—identified as a man 18 years old—had been heading south on the freeway in a Fiat 500. The Fiat struck another vehicle that was stationary on the freeway after the other vehicle had been in a prior collision.
The person driving the Fiat could not stop in time, CHP says, and struck the stationary vehicle. Reports say the impact from the crash threw the driver of the Fiat from the vehicle. He suffered injuries that were described as serious.
According to CHP, a teenager—identified as 18 years old who had been traveling as a passenger and was injured, exited the Fiat and walked to the freeway’s right shoulder. Two passengers remained in the wrecked Fiat: a man 18 years old, and a boy 17 years old. The damaged Fiat did not have tail lights or headlights that were still working, and the vehicle was facing the wrong way.
CHP says that a big rig—driven by a man 63 years old and a resident of Menifee could not avoid the Fiat that was stranded in the lane in front of the truck. The front end of the big rig crashed into the front end of the Fiat.
The 17-year-old boy who had been a passenger in the Fiat was killed at the accident scene. The other teenager who was in the Fiat suffered injuries that were described as major. The names of the people involved in the crash have not yet been reported.
