Plane Crashes and Burns at Corona Airport, Killing Four People

CORONA, CA (January 23, 2020) –  A little after noon on Wednesday, a small plane that had taken off from Corona Municipal Airport crashed and burned, killing four people who were aboard. The January 22 incident occurred at 1900 Aviation Drive.

The time was roughly 12:10 p.m., John DeYoe said. DeYoe is with Corona Fire.

Reports say a single-engine plane—which has not been described—had been taking off from the airport, and crashed at the runway’s end. According to DeYoe, the airplane had been carrying 80 gallons of fuel, and the fuel caught fire after the crash, and burned brush nearby.

Responders arrived and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire that was burning roughly a quarter acre, as well as the plane, which was fully engulfed, reports say.

Responders found four people inside the plane were deceased.

Reports say people who witnessed the incident saw the plane had problems taking off. A witness said she yelled that the plane was about to crash, because she knew people in the airport’s hangars were equipped with fire extinguishers.

The woman said she witnessed the plane strike a fence and overturn, and begin to burn. According to the witness, people at the airport rushed with extinguishers to attempt dousing the fire until firefighters arrived.

The identities of the victims, including names, ages, gender, and cities of residence, have not been reported.

A Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, Ian Gregor, said his agency and the National Transportation Safety Board would examine the crash to understand its causes.

No other details are known at this time.
