Woman Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver While Standing Beside Vehicle on Shoulder of 91 Freeway in Corona
CORONA, CA (May 14, 2019) – Desiree Taitano, who had been standing beside a vehicle on the right shoulder of the 91 Freeway in Corona early Monday morning, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. The May 13 incident occurred on the freeway’s eastbound side, close to Green River Road and to the east of it.
The time was roughly 2:00 a.m., according to Bryan Arendt. Arendt is a sergeant with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say investigators think that Taitano, and Taitano’s friend—who had been traveling in a different vehicle—each pulled to the side of the road. According to reports, the vehicles stopped because the dogs belonging to the friend were misbehaving.
Steven Rusk, who is a sergeant, indicated Taitano exited her vehicle to offer help. According to Rusk, while Taitano was standing on the road’s right shoulder to help her friend, a vehicle hit her. She died at the accident site. She was 33 years old and a resident of Riverside.
When officers came to the accident site, the vehicle that had struck Taitano was not present. According to Arendt, officers found the vehicle roughly 500 away. It had been abandoned.
Authorities found the person who is suspected of being the hit-and-run driver at home. They arrested him. Rusk said the man had called in to report the accident some time after it occurred.
California Highway Patrol identified the suspected driver as Jose Antonio Hildalgo, a resident of Corona. According to reports, he faces charges that include felony hit and run.
