CORONA, CA (January 10, 2019) – A carjacking suspect led police on a chase in Corona, resulting in collisions, injuries, and arrest on Wednesday afternoon. The January 9 incident occurred on River Road in the 400 block.
The time was roughly 4:00 p.m., according to Tobias Kouroubacalis. Kouroubacalis is an officer with the Corona Police Department.
Reports say that police tried to stop a vehicle—described as a Honda Accord, white in color—but the person driving fled. The suspect had carjacked the Honda, police said, from the vehicle’s owner as he was standing close to his car. According to reports, the vehicle’s owner—whose name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported—was not injured in the carjacking.
Reports say that another person—identified as a male—who had been standing nearby was assaulted when the suspect carjacked the Honda. The bystander—whose name, age, and city of residence have not yet been reported—suffered injuries that were described as minor.
Reports from officials said that officers tried to stop the Honda on E. Olive Street in the 200 block in Corona at roughly 5:53 p.m. The suspect fled, and police pursued the vehicle. The suspect driver crashed the vehicle into a tree, and then struck two vehicles, ending the chase. The driver—who was identified as Eric Guzman, 20 years old and a resident of Corona—ran from the crashed car.
A police K-9 dog bit Guzman, and stopped him, reports say. Police arrested Guzman on suspicion of carjacking the vehicle. Respondents took Guzman to a hospital in the area for treatment of injuries that were described as minor.
Two victims—who were identified only as women—had been hurt in the collision and suffered injuries, which were not described. Respondents took the victims to the hospital. The names, ages, and cities of residence of the victims have not yet been reported, nor the types of injuries they suffered or their current condition.
Where the victims were located—including whether they were drivers of the vehicles struck in the crashes, or whether they were passengers—has not yet been reported. The types of vehicles that were struck have not yet been reported.
Police ask that if anyone has information about the carjacking incident, he or she should call Sergeant Skip Shatford at the Corona Police Department. The number is 951-736-2323.
