Crash in the Area of Citrus in the San Gabriel Valley During Police Pursuit Causes Injuries
CITRUS, CA (March 9, 2021) – Late in the afternoon on Monday, a chain-reaction crash in the area of Citrus in the San Gabriel Valley injured four people. The March 8 incident occurred during police pursuit of a suspected DUI driver in a vehicle that was reported stolen.
The time was roughly 5:45 p.m., according to Rodrigo Jimenez. Jimenez is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle–described as an Acura Integra–was reported to have been stolen in the area of Azusa, and that Azusa police were pursuing it. The Acura was traveling southbound on Barranca Avenue.
In an area where Barranca intersects Arrow Highway, reports say, the Acura traveled into the lanes that head north, going the wrong way. Five vehicles ended up being involved in a collision located in the unincorporated area of Citrus, which borders Glendora and Covina.
A vehicle that the Acura struck was described as a Toyota Camry. Three other vehicles also collided, which were not described.
The force of the crash threw the suspect driver from the Acura.
Responders arrived and transported three people to the hospital. Two of the patients had been traveling in the suspected stolen vehicle. They suffered injuries that were described as serious.
One patient had been traveling as a passenger in the Toyota Camry. The person suffered injuries that were described as minor. The person who had been driving the Camry suffered injuries that were also described as minor, but was not taken to the hospital.
The victims have not been identified in reports.
The person who is suspected of driving the suspected stolen vehicle and fleeing police was identified as a resident of Duarte, 30 years old. His name has not been reported. Authorities suspect he was DUI at the time of the crash.
The passenger who had been traveling with the suspect driver was identified as 23 years old. His name has also not been reported.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the crash have not been identified. Reports do not say if there were passengers in the three other vehicles, or if anyone else was hurt.
The owner of the suspected stolen vehicle has not been identified.
Investigators are working on the details and gathering information.
