Deadly Crash in Chula Vista on I-805 Leads to Arrest for Suspected DUI Driver
CHULA VISTA, CA (December 13, 2018) – A person who was involved in a crash on I-805 in Chula Vista that killed a man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. The California Highway Patrol says that John Thomas Kallis, a 29-year-old resident of San Diego, had been driving a sedan that collided with a pickup truck late Tuesday night.
According to reports, Kallis’ vehicle was described as a 2012 Toyota Yaris; the deceased’s vehicle was described as a 2004 Nissan Frontier pickup. Both vehicles had been traveling on the northbound side of the freeway; the collision occurred close to Bonita Road.
The impact from the December 11 crash pushed the pickup to swerve into a Caltrans construction area. The pickup smashed into the rear of a dump truck that was parked there, according to Jake Sanchez. Sanchez is a public-affairs officer with California Highway Patrol.
Respondents arrived on scene and transported the person who had been driving the pickup truck—identified as a man 55 years old and a resident of San Diego—to the hospital. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital. His name has not yet been reported.
Reports say that Kallis was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.
