Big Rig Crashes on I-5 Near Castaic, Killing Driver; CHP Officer Injured

CASTAIC, CA (January 4, 2021) – Early in the afternoon on Monday, a big rig crashed near Castaic, killing the driver. A California Highway Patrol officer who went to the crash site to help was injured in the January 4 incident, which occurred on I-5 in an area near Templin Highway, and to the north of it.

The big rig–described as an Ace Hardware truck–veered off the freeway’s northbound lane, and traveled roughly 80 feet on the embankment. Reports say the person driving the truck had experienced a medical episode at the time of the crash.

An officer with the California Highway Patrol performed CPR on the patient until paramedics came on scene. The officer suffered an injury, which may have been heat exhaustion, reports say.

Responders pronounced the driver deceased at the crash site. The identity of the person, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.

Responders transported the officer by airlift to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The identity of the officer has not been reported, nor the officer’s current condition.

Investigators are working on gathering information about the incident.
