Woman Killed in Carlsbad Crash; Driver Suspected of DUI

CARLSBAD, CA (September 17, 2019) – A woman was killed Sunday night when the vehicle in which she had been traveling as a passenger crashed in Carlsbad. The driver of the vehicle in the September 15 incident has been accused of driving under the influence (DUI).

Reports say the driver crashed where Cobblestone Road and Aviara Parkway intersect after losing control of the vehicle. The vehicle—described as a Honda Civic—struck a light pole, police said.

According to Christie Calderwood, who is a lieutenant, the person who had been riding as a passenger in the vehicle died at the accident site. Her identity, including name and city of residence, has not been reported. She was identified only as 41 years old.

The driver was identified as Ramos Santos, 37 years old and a resident of San Marcos. Santos was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, homicide, and driving on a suspended license.

Santos was injured in the crash, and responders transported him to a hospital. The types of injuries he suffered, and his current condition are not known.

Investigators are continuing their work to gather details and information regarding the incident.
