Driver Fleeing Police Dies in Wrong-way Collision, Killing Other Driver on I-5 in Carlsbad
CARLSBAD, CA (January 14, 2020) – Early in the morning on Tuesday, a driver who was fleeing police collided with another vehicle on I-5 as he traveled the wrong-way, causing his death and that of the other driver. The January 14 incident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, near the exit for Las Flores Drive and to the south of it.
The time was a little after midnight, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say the incident began in Oceanside close to Monterey Drive, when police attempted to make a traffic stop for a truck driver who made a minor traffic violation. According to reports, the driver of the truck initially stopped and pulled over, but as the officer began to walk toward the truck, the man drove off.
The truck driver entered I-5 traveling the wrong way, going south against traffic in the lanes that head north. According to reports, the truck struck a vehicle—described as a Pontiac sedan—head on.
The California Highway Patrol said the truck driver and the person who had been driving the car were both killed in the crash.
The person who had been driving the car was identified only as a man 19 years old. According to the California Highway Patrol, the victim may have been a member of the military because of his identification and the license plate information. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
The person who had been driving the truck was identified as a man 42 years old and a resident of San Diego. His name has not been reported.
Responders took a person who had been traveling as a passenger in the truck to a hospital. The person’s injuries were described as serious. The identity of the person has not been reported.
Reports say once the truck began to travel in the wrong direction, California Highway Patrol ceased pursuit by vehicle, but monitored the truck by helicopter.
Investigators are working to collect information regarding the incident.
