A Los Angeles Police Department officer was killed Friday morning in Beverley Hills. Another officer in the same was injured when a dump truck collided with their patrol car.
The accident happened at the intersection of Loma Vista Dr. and Robert Ln. around 8 a.m. The driver of the dump trunk allegedly lost control of the vehicle, striking the police vehicle, said the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officer who died, a male with over 10 years on the force, died on the scene. The injured officer, a female, and the driver of the truck were both transported to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Both were in critical condition.
The names of the officers haven’t been released yet. Both were part of LAPD’s Hollywood Division.
“On behalf of the city, we grieve a hero this morning,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said during an 11 a.m. news conference at the hospital. “An officer gave his life to the people of Los Angeles in service.”
According to a preliminary investigation, a brake failure on the truck caused the accident.
“The chief and I were able to visit his partner and she’s strong and she’s going to make it through this,” Garcetti said of the injured female officer. She graduated from the police academy three months ago.
“Loma Vista Drive from Dohney Drive to city limits is shut down. We anticipate the shut down will be for the remainder of the morning,” the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a statement.
The investigation into the car crash is ongoing. No charges have been filed.
