A car chase Thursday morning ended in East Los Angeles that resulted in the hospitalization of a California Highway Patrol officer and the arrest of a driver.
The Downey Police Department requested assistance from the California Highway Patrol around 1 a.m. Thursday morning. The call came after a residential burglary that ended in a pursuit.
The suspects vehicle, a FOrd Econoline van, was chased onto the 605 Freeway, 5 Freeway and side streets for about an hour, said California Highway Patrol Lt. Paul Medeiros.
The crash involving the CHP cruiser occurred on Paramount Blvd. near Slauson Ave. in Pico Rivera. The crash occured when a CHP officer swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle that was not involved in the chase.
The CHP vehicle struck the center medium, hit a building and knocked over a fire hydrant before coming to a rest. The officer, who hasn’t been identified, was taking to a local hospital with only minor injuries.
At around 1:40 a.m., near 58th St. and Compton Ave., the pursuit ended. Three men were taken into custody. A Fernando Frenes of Montebello, 46, was arrested and charged with felony pursuit and assault with a deadly weapon. The names of the others arrested were not released. It is also not clear if they were charged with any crimes.
