Chain-reaction Crashes in Canoga Park at Sherman Way and De Soto Avenue Injures Nine
CANOGA PARK, CA (October 21, 2019) – A series of crashes in Canoga Park on Sunday night, involving two vehicles, injured nine people. The October 20 incident occurred where De Soto Avenue and Sherman Way intersect.
The time was roughly a little before 9:00 p.m., Brian Humphrey said. Humphrey is a spokesperson with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Reports say one vehicle had been traveling on De Soto Avenue and heading south. The vehicle has not been described. Another vehicle was traveling on Sherman Way heading west. It has also not been described.
The vehicle that had been heading south collided with the vehicle that had been traveling west, according to Joe McGee. McGee is a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department.
The impact sent the vehicle that had been traveling west into a fire hydrant, which broke off and sent a plume of water into the air. Water collected on the roof of a building where a Warehouse Shoe Sale store is located, and the weight of the water caused the roof to collapse.
According to Thomas Gikas, who is a battalion chief with the Los Angeles Fire Department, a significant amount of water was released from the broken hydrant. The roof collapsed into the store.
The crash also sent high voltage wires to fall, according to reports.
The incident injured nine people, four of whom suffered injuries that were described as serious. One of the victims was identified as a child 10 years of age who had been inside the building. When the roof fell, the child’s leg was broken, according to reports.
None of the people involved in the incident have been identified by name and city of residence. It is not known from reports who the injured people were, or what types of injuries the other victims suffered.
The driver of the westbound vehicle has not been identified.
The person who had been driving the vehicle that had been traveling southbound was identified as a woman 29 years old. According the McGee, officers arrested her on suspicion of DUI.
Investigators are continuing their work to gather details and information regarding the incident.
