BUTTONWILLOW, CA (July 5, 2018) – A vehicle headed the wrong way on the 5 Freeway in Buttonwillow collided with another vehicle Thursday morning.

The early morning crash occurred around 12:33 a.m. on 5 Freeway northbound. The accident scene was a little south of Lerdo Highway. Two people died in the crash.

A silver compact sedan was heading southbound in the northbound lanes of the 5 Freeway, California Highway Patrol says. It struck another vehicle head on.

One person in each vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kern County Coroner. The report does not yet make available the names of the two people who died.

Authorites closed the freeway so personnel so work at the accident scene.

Investigators are examining the details to see what caused the fatal crash.
