Teenagers Killed in Off-Road Vehicle Accident in Blythe; Two Girls Hurt
BLYTHE, CA (September 18, 2019) – Javier Castillo and Eliseo Castillo, two teenagers aged 13 and 14 respectively, were killed on Sunday when the off-road vehicle they were traveling in crashed in Blythe. The victims were identified by the Riverside County Coroner. The September 15 incident occurred in an unincorporated area located in Riverside County, close to Mesa Drive and east of it, and south of I-10.
The time was roughly 11:45 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say that a girl, 13 years old, had been driving the off-road vehicle—described as a Polaris RZR. The girl turned to the left and the vehicle overturned on its right side.
The girl who was driving, and another girl—aged 9, who had been seated in the rear—had both been using their seatbelts. The two girls suffered injuries that were described as moderate. Their current condition is not known. The identities of the two girls have not been reported.
Javier Castillo and Eliseo Castillo had been seated on top of the panels of the rear doors. They both were facing inward, with their backs to the outside. The boys were not wearing seatbelts.
According to the California Highway Patrol, both of the boys were thrown from vehicle when it crashed. The vehicle then fell onto them.
The two boys died from their injuries. They had been residents of San Jacinto.
Investigators are working to understand the factors that contributed to the accident.
