Hit-and-Run Accident On Highway 62 Kills Benjamin Perez

Twentynine Palms, CA (January 27, 2025)  – Authorities have identified 31-year-old Benjamin Perez of Twentynine Palms as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon on Highway 62.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident unfolded on January 14, at approximately 4:15 p.m. According to investigators, a Chevrolet Silverado traveling eastbound at high speed abruptly changed lanes in front of a Nissan, prompting the Nissan driver to swerve to avoid a collision.

Despite the evasive maneuver, the Nissan lost control, striking the right front of the Silverado. The chain reaction continued as the Nissan collided with a Burrtec trash truck before crashing into a Tesla Model Y near Kerr Avenue.

Emergency responders pronounced Perez, the driver of the Nissan, dead at the scene. Meanwhile, the Tesla driver sustained minor injuries and was transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center for treatment. The driver of the Burrtec truck was unharmed.

Driver of The Green Silverado Pickup Truck Fled The Scene Immediately

The driver of the Silverado fled the scene immediately after the crash. Authorities described the suspect vehicle as a dark green Chevrolet Silverado with an extended cab or four-door configuration, step rails, a missing front license plate, and possibly a 4×4 decal on the left rear of the truck bed.

CHP officials are urging anyone with information about the Silverado or its driver to contact the Morongo Basin CHP Office at (760) 366-3707.

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred on Jan. 14 in Joshua Tree. The California Highway Patrol identified the victim as 31-year-old Benjamin Perez of Twentynine Palms.

Following an investigation aided by community tips, police arrested 60-year-old Richard Heck of Yucca Valley on Friday.

He faces multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, and pleaded guilty on Tuesday. Heck remains in custody at the West Valley Detention Center with bail set at $290,000.
