Driver Crashes into Bell Gardens Restaurant and Dies After Avoiding Pedestrian
BELL GARDENS, CA (January 4, 2021) – Early in the morning on New Year’s Day in Bell Gardens, a driver was killed after avoiding a pedestrian and smashing into a restaurant. The January 1 incident occurred where Eastern Avenue and Gage Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly 12:10 a.m., Bell Gardens Police said.
A vehicle, which has not been described, was reported to have been traveling east on Gage at a fast speed. The driver veered away to miss hitting a pedestrian who was in the crosswalk.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, which went over the curb and smashed into JB Burgers restaurant at 5718 Gage Avenue. Responders arrived and found the vehicle was totaled. The driver died at the crash site.
The identity of the driver, including his name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.
The restaurant’s building was damaged, but the extent of the damage is not known. The owner of the business and the owner of the building have not been identified.
The identity of the pedestrian has also not been reported.
Investigators are continuing their work on the incident.
