Vehicle Hits and Kills Bicyclist on Sidewalk at Bakersfield Intersection
BAKERSFIELD, CA (March 12, 2020) – On Tuesday in Bakersfield, a bicyclist was struck and killed by a vehicle that went onto a sidewalk. The March 10 incident occurred close to where Columbus Street and Union Avenue intersect.
The time was roughly noon, according to Bakersfield Police.
Reports say the person who had been driving the vehicle is alleged to have fallen asleep, according to police. The driver awakened, moved the vehicle abruptly to miss other vehicles nearby, and went on the sidewalk. A bicyclist, who was waiting at the intersection, was struck and killed by the vehicle.
A vehicle—which has not been described—subsequently crashed into the first vehicle. The first vehicle has also not been described.
Responders arrived and found the bicyclist was killed in the crash. The identity of the victim, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the vehicle that struck the bicyclist has not been identified in reports.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the crash has also not been identified.
