Orlando Tapia Hit and Killed After Crash on Highway 99 in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA (December 21, 2018) – A man who exited his vehicle after a crash in Bakersfield on Highway 99 was hit and killed, the California Highway Patrol said.

According to reports, the man—identified as Orlando Tapia, a 19-year-old resident of Delano—was in a vehicle that collided with other vehicles in the highway’s southbound lanes. Tapia had been driving a Nissan, which collided with a Volvo and a Mazda.

Reports say that the Mazda was disabled after the crash, and sat blocking the highway’s number 1 lane. The Mazda’s driver exited the vehicle. According to reports, Tapia then exited his vehicle—the Nissan—and started to walk to the highway’s center median to talk to the driver of the Mazda. California Highway Patrol says that a Toyota approached the scene of the accident, and its driver saw the immobile Mazda. The driver of the Toyota swerved to avoid the accident site, but struck Tapia and the driver of the Mazda.

Tapia died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Mazda suffered injuries that were described as major, affecting his right leg. Respondents took him to Kern Medical Center. The identity of the driver of the Mazda has not yet been reported, his name, age, and city of residence.

The identity of the driver of the Toyota has not yet been reported, the name, age, gender, and city of residence of the person. Reports say that drugs or alcohol are not thought to have played a role in the accident.
