Driver Pursued by Police Jumps from Vehicle on I-5 in Anaheim; Is Struck and Killed

ANAHEIM, CA (July 24, 2020) – A man who was pursued by police jumped from the vehicle he was driving on I-5; he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle. The July 23 incident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway.

The time was roughly 11:30 p.m., Anaheim Police said.

Reports say the incident was preceded by Fullerton police officers observing a car–which has not been described–that was going at a fast speed on the 91 Freeway eastbound. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but the driver would not stop.

According to reports, authorities stopped the ground pursuit because of the manner in which the person was driving. Anaheim authorities continued to watch the fleeing vehicle from the air, reports say.

After traveling on the 91 Freeway westbound in Artesia, the vehicle was observed by Buena Park police. Officers attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver did not pull over. According to reports, the driver continued to drive at a fast speed, and authorities ended their pursuit.

The vehicle again traveled on the 91 Freeway eastbound, and crashed at the off-ramp for Euclid Street. It was a solo-vehicle crash, reports say.

Some minutes elapsed, and the man got out of the car and jumped from the overpass, landing 50 below on I-5 northbound. A vehicle that was passing by on the freeway hit the man, according to Duane Graham. Graham is an officer with California Highway Patrol.

The man died at the incident site. His identity–including name, age, and city of residence–has not been reported. No one else was traveling with the man in the vehicle he was driving, reports say.

The person who had been driving the vehicle that struck the man has not been identified. The driver cooperated with the investigation.

If anyone has information about the series of events, the person can contact Anaheim Police. The number is 714-765-1900.
