L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. Recruit is in Grave Condition After Being Injured in Whittier Crash
WHITTIER, CA (November 22, 2022) – Alejandro Martinez–who is one of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recruits who was struck and injured in Whittier–is in grave condition, authorities said. The November 16 crash occurred on Mills Avenue in the 10600 block, close to Telegraph Road.
The time was roughly 6:30 a.m., according to authorities.
Martinez had been on a training run with roughly 74 recruits near the sheriff’s STARS Explorer Academy law enforcement training center.
A vehicle–described as a Honda CRV–veered into the group, striking a number of them before smashing into a light pole, which came down.
Five of the recruits were seriously injured, reports say, and Martinez was reported as in grave condition.
The other four recruits who were critically injured have not been identified in reports.
Reports say other injured recruits–numbering more than 22–have been treated at hospitals and released.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the recruits were running when the SUV veered into the lane of opposing traffic and struck them.
The suspect driver was identified as Nicholas Joseph Gutierrez, a resident of Diamond Bar, 22 years old.
Investigators are continuing their work on the crash.
