Small Plane Crashes in Agoura Hills on Northbound 101 Freeway, Closing All Lanes
AGOURA HILLS, CA (October 24, 2018) – Tuesday afternoon, a small plane crashed in Agoura Hills on the 101 Freeway. The October 23 accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, and caused authorities to close the freeway in both directions for a number of hours.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred near Liberty Canyon Road to the south. The time was roughly 1:45 p.m.
The plane, which struck the road in the lane farthest to the left, came to rest at the freeway’s center divider. The impact from the crash caused the plane to catch fire.
Responders from the Los Angeles County Fire Department extinguished the fire. The pilot was not hurt in the crash, officials said, and no other person seemed to be aboard when the crash occurred. No vehicles were involved when the crash happened. Reports say that the pilot was assisted by Good Samaritans to escape the plane.
According to California Highway Patrol, the pilot began having trouble with the engine during a test run. The pilot—identified as Robert Sandberg, a 43-year-old resident of Camarillo—told a reporter who had been traveling on the freeway, and who had seen the crash occur, that the engine failed.
The plane was described by the Van Nuys Airport as a vintage plane, and part of a vintage flying club called the Condor Squadron. It was a 1940s era SNJ-5 plane.
Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will examine the details to determine the cause of the crash.
