A good Samaritan was killed in the act of assisting a car accident victim on Thursday morning in Sacramento. The man was helping the victim on the freeway when a car slammed into him. The first accident occurred when for no reason a car rolled over on the eastbound side of Interstate 80. The woman that the bystander was assisting was locked inside with her seatbelt on in the upside-down car. Of course he was having a difficult time trying to get the woman outside of the car and to safety, but no one would have imagined that he himself would in such grave danger.
The man was transported by flight to a local hospital for treatment, but he died once he arrived there. The woman is currently being treated and is she is stable.
California Highway Patrol officials lamented the sad incident. “In situations like this, things happen very quickly. You get caught up in the moment. There is a scene in front of you,” said CHP Sgt. Mike Lehman. “People don’t come upon traffic collision scenes everyday, so there is a little bit of a sense of urgency in people’s minds; and people tend to forget about there own safety when trying to render aid in a situation like this.”
The morning commute was definitely backed up and troublesome for drivers, but the CHP stated that they had to investigate the collision and clean up the scene of the accident. They tried to finish as quickly as possible so that people could get into Sacramento from Dixon.
The cause of the crash is still unclear at this time. Officials hope to find out more information in the coming days.
