San Diego, CA (May 11, 2018) – Authorities in San Diego County are trying to locate relatives of 7 children who were orphaned when both their parents were killed after their family’s SUV overturned in Imperial County sometime last Friday, May 11th. According to investigators familiar with the case, the family left the Silvercrest Apartments complex in Lakeside, a city about 16 miles northeast of San Diego, Friday morning en route to Texas to start a “new life”.
Their father could be seen in surveillance footage recovered from the apartment complex’s property manager, Welman Simmons, loading a U-Haul trailer with the family’s belongings. The family then exits the apartment complex in a red 1999 Ford Expedition around 9:00 a.m. and leaves the view of surveillance cameras. Sometime after 10:30 a.m. California Highway Patrol dispatchers received reports of a single-vehicle rollover on Interstate 8 near Plaster City, about 18 miles west of El Centro in Imperial County. According to investigators, the Ford Expedition veered off the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 and as the father tried to correct the steering the SUV flipped over and came to a rest in the center median. Evidence at the scene suggests that none of the occupants of the Ford Expedition were wearing seatbelts at the time of the rollover. The parents and all 7 children were ejected from the Ford Expedition. First responders arrived to find the 41-year old father and the 31-year old mother dead at the scene. All 7 children, ranging in ages between 1 and 12 years-old were discovered suffering from minor to critical injuries sustain in the accident.
Several of the children suffering serious injuries were transported to Riverside University Hospital and Rady Children’s Hospital, while the remaining children were taken to Loma Linda Hospital and El Centro Regional Medical Center. All children are expected to recover with 2 needing extensive recovery and rehabilitation.
California Highway Patrol investigators are trying to determine the cause of the Ford Expeditions rollover. Surveillance footage at the Silvercrest Apartment complex might provide some insight on the Ford Expeditions condition prior to the fatal accident. Property manager Welman Simmons notices a flaw in the tire conditions of the SUV, “They had two bald tires and the trailer was too low in the front,” he said. Simmons also told investigators that and social worker from Child Protective Services had visited the family’s apartment to have an interview with the parents 3 days before the accident, but left after no one answered the door. The children are anticipated to be cared for at the Polinksy Children’s Center after they are discharged from treatment while authorities search for next of kin.
