An accident early this morning, October 20, 2011, spilled 5,000 live chickens onto Interstate 80 near Vacaville. About 2:00 a.m., a big rig that was carrying the birds to a processing plant hit another big rig that was stopped on the freeway’s shoulder.
As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the driver who had been transporting the chickens had fallen asleep, and his truck was veering from a direct line of travel. The driver of the other truck, who was stopped on the freeway’s shoulder due to mechanical problems, witnessed the swerving big rig. According to the news story, he radioed the driver of the swerving big rig to try to awaken him. The driver did not respond. The swerving truck hit the stopped truck, and one of the trailers loaded with crated chickens jack-knifed, spilling the birds on the freeway.
The Times reports that an SUV swerved to miss hitting the chickens and debris on the freeway, and the vehicle ended up in a ditch. Rescuers took the elderly couple from the SUV to the hospital.
All westbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for several hours.
