The southbound 215 Freeway was shut down Tuesday morning and afternoon after an accident. A motor home trailer was involved. The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. and it was in an area with a bridge that is currently under construction.

According to California Highway Patrol, D Street in Perris was the site of the accident.  A big rig apparently was hauling a mobile home across the freeway when it slammed into the bridge and went off the side, falling many feet to its resting place.  The big rig is owned by Mobile Modular Transport.

The driver of the big rig was injured in the accident. Most of his injuries were moderate and he was transported to a local hospital for monitoring and treatment of his medical condition.

“As a result all southbound lanes will remain closed for at least 24 hours due to damage to the false work, which will have to be removed and rebuilt,” Terri Kasinga of Cal Trans said.

The 215 Freeway experienced heavy traffic build-up across the board but especially on the affected southbound side. A SigAlert was issued and in affect by 8 a.m. It is unclear when the SigAlert will be removed and the freeway will be reopened to all motorists.

No other injuries have been reported and it is not certain whether any other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Motorists and commuters have been advised to avoid the 215 Freeway and take the 74 or Ramona Expressway which is a State Route or the 1-15 in Corona as alternate means of traveling to their respective destinations. Of course, the traffic during the evening rush hour will be hectic and affecting multiple interstates and freeways due to this closure.

An investigation has not been announced, but authorities, along with the CHP, will be determining what caused the motor home trailer to hit the bridge and if the construction had any impact on this crash.
