Montgomery County Animal Control has decided to be stricter regarding rules on animal control. This is following to separated incidents. These incidents involved two vicious dog attacks on children. Both these incidents occurred in less than a week. Tim Holifield, with Montgomery County Animal Control, is urging dog owners. Dog owners need to be to be more cognizant of their dogs. It is necessary for the owners to take steps to prevent similar types of incidents.
Christian Gormanous was only 4 years old and was killed on January 19th by a Pit-bull. The incident occurred when Christian climbed a fence into a neighbor’s back yard. This is where the pit-bull was chained. The boy’s 9 year old sister was brave enough to pull him away from the dog. The boy was flown to a Houston-area hospital. But, it was too late; he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The second dog attackoccurred Tuesday when Pricilla Rodriguez was outside playing with her 18 month old son, Anthony. According to Holifield, Rodriguez said the dog was also a pit bull. She said that the dog was always chained but somehow was able to escape and break free. As she tried to protect her son, Rodriguez also suffered bite wounds.
Both were taken to Houston area hospitals where the toddler is listed in good condition at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. Rodriguez was treated for her injuries as well. Holifield said both dogs were taken into custody by Animal Control officers. Following a 10-day quarantine, the dog responsible for Gormanous’ death will be euthanized.
In the Rodriguez incident, Holifield said, the owner of the dog already was in the Montgomery County Jail. He said Animal Control officers will request the owner also surrender the dog to be euthanized following a10-day quarantine. If the owner refuses, Holifield said, the case will go to a judge to make the decision on the fate of the dog.
