Fontana Collision Victims Identified
August 7th ─ Officials have identified the 3 members of a family who were killed after a suspected DUI driver hit them on the 10 Freeway in Fontana Friday afternoon. The 2 children killed in Friday’s tragic crash were step-siblings Ailyan Miguel and Isaac Briseño, both 12-years old. Their grandmothers, 58-year old Maria Luisa Rodriguez, as well as a man who had stopped to lend aid to the family were also killed. His daughters identified him as Jose Prieto, 60-years old of Rialto. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. when the Briseño family pulled their vehicle, an older Honda Accord, off to the emergency breakdown lane of the eastbound 10 freeway near Cherry Avenue after it became overheated.
Details About the Fatal Crash on 10 Freeway
Prieto, spotting the broke down Honda Accord and pulled over in his Toyota Tacoma to offer help. Rodriguez was standing outside the family’s overheated Honda with her 2 grandchildren before the fatal collision. Luis Sanchez, 64-years old of Riverside, who authorities suspect could have been driving under the influence then slammed his Nissan Frontier into the rear of the Briseño’s Honda around 12:35 p.m. The family had been driving to San Bernardino to spend part of the weekend with relatives, family members said. Rodriguez, the 2 children and the Prieto were all pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. The children’s mother, Maria Briseño, 39-years old, was the sole survivor. Maria Briseño was not harmed in the crash, but was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center because of her hysterical state that paramedics feared could turn into a heart attack.
California Highway Patrol officers say they have issued a warrant to conduct a blood test on Sanchez to confirm their suspicions that he was in fact under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. Sanchez told CHP officers that he was on the way home from work and fell asleep, but video footage taken at the accident site revealed a beer can in plain sight beneath the driver’s seat of his truck, leading authorities to question whether alcohol played a factor in the crash. Sanchez was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and received medical treatment for minor face and neck injuries.
What was supposed to have been a fun family gathering became a sudden food fundraiser as the Briseño family prepared for 3 funerals to lay their loved ones to rest. “We’re blessed, we are blessed. We didn’t expect this much people this early. We had planned it to start at around 12 – at 11 we had a line of people waiting,” said Rocio Ramirez, sister to Maria Briseño. When asked about the state of her sister, Rocio added, “You can’t put into words. She’s not stable. It’s something that I think is going to take a long time for her to cope with it. It’s tough; she lost both of her kids and her mom”.
Jose Prieto’s loved ones said they will hold a fundraiser for him in Rialto Sunday afternoon. “He was a person that loved God very much,” Monica Prieto said of her father. “He was always there to help somebody in need”.
