14 Freeway Accident Causes Major Pileup and Closures

Posted on June 18, 2013 | Written By: iadminlaw

Only one lane was open on Monday evening on the northbound 14 Freeway after an accident caused all the northbound lanes to completely shut down for hours on end. About a dozen people were injured in the traffic collision.

The accident was caused by a driver going the wrong or opposite direction on the freeway. It is unclear why.

Traffic started to ease up around 7 p.m. when the California Highway Patrol allowed one lane to reopen. It was the carpool that they decided to open since the other lanes were still being assessed and cleaned from the aftermath of the accident. Eventually, the police were able to open all the lanes and allow motorists to have free reign of the small freeway once again following the terrible crash. However, at one point during the closure, cars were driving off the freeway into the embankment on the side near Soledad Canyon Road, which they used as an alternate route or detour to avoid the parking lot effect that the closure had had on traffic on the northbound side of the 14 Freeway.

The accident occurred near Agua Dulce Canyon Road between Castaic and Lancaster. This area is usually heavily impacted by commuters driving home from work in the Los Angeles area.

A pickup truck was the vehicle that slammed into a car that was heading north, but going the wrong way. This ended up causing a pileup involving about six other vehicles. It is unclear why the person was driving in the wrong direction. Officials have not released any information regarding the drivers. An investigation is clearly needed to ascertain whether or not drugs and alcohol were involved in the traffic accident.

Three people were taken into the hospital and stated to be in critical condition. The Los Angeles Fire Department is not sure about the injuries or whereabouts of the other victims and drivers involved in the accident.
