Interstate 8 Five-Vehicle Crash Causes Crippling Traffic Near College Avenue

Major Delays on Interstate 8 After Pile-Up In San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 9, 2025) — A multi-vehicle crash involving up to five vehicles snarled traffic Wednesday morning on westbound Interstate 8 near College Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred around 8:45 a.m. and involved a white Mazda CX-5, a black Nissan Pathfinder, a white Toyota Camry, and at least two other vehicles, including a gray sedan believed to be a Toyota or Honda. One vehicle reportedly overturned during the crash but landed upright, while others ended up facing the wrong direction in active lanes of traffic.
A White Toyota Camry Came To A Rest In The Center Lanes With Air Bags Deployed
The white Toyota Camry was seen blocking the center lane with its airbags deployed. Emergency responders from both the CHP and San Diego Police Department arrived quickly, initiating traffic breaks and requesting multiple tow trucks to manage the scene and remove the wrecked vehicles.
Debris and disabled cars temporarily blocked several lanes, creating significant delays for westbound commuters near the 70th Street area.
Tow Trucks Were Called To Clear The Vehicles and Get Traffic Flowing Again
Tow trucks from Road One reached the scene, on interstate 8, by 8:55 a.m., and crews worked to move most vehicles to the right-hand shoulder. By 9:11 a.m., all lanes had reopened, although one disabled vehicle remained in the slow lane.
An ambulance responded to the crash, but injuries were described as minor.
CHP is investigating the cause of the crash on interstate 8.
