Deadly Wrong-Way Crash on The 73 Near MacArthur Claims 1 Life in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (September 22, 2024) – A deadly wrong-way accident on Highway 73 near MacArthur Boulevard resulted in one fatality on Sunday night. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. when a driver, for unknown reasons, was traveling southbound in the wrong direction on the Highway 73 toll road.

Impact of The Collision Caused The Car To Burst Into Flames Killing The Driver

The wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle near MacArthur Boulevard. The impact caused one of the vehicles to burst into flames, while a person was seen escaping from the vehicle that was not engulfed in fire.

Due To The Severity of the Crash, All Lanes Were Closed For Several Hours

Emergency services responded promptly, and the Orange County Coroner’s Office arrived at the scene by 10:05 p.m. to assist with the fatal victim, who is believed to be the wrong-way driver. Due to the severity of the crash, debris was scattered across the road, and all lanes were closed while the California Highway Patrol conducted their investigation.

Officials have not yet released the name of the deceased or identified the cause of the accident. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
