Pomona, CA (July 6th, 2023) – A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday evening, July 2, resulting in the death of a man and the subsequent arrest of Mark Shoemate following a DUI crash in Pomona.
Tow Truck Sent Into On Coming Traffic After Being Struck By Mark Shoemate
The fatal collision occurred around 10:00 p.m. on the southbound lanes of the 71 Freeway, just north of Rio Rancho Road. According to authorities from the Pomona Police Department, a flatbed tow truck was traveling in the northbound direction when it was struck by another vehicle. The impact of the collision propelled the tow truck over the center divider and into oncoming traffic in the southbound lanes.
Regrettably, the out-of-control tow truck collided with a minivan occupied by a family who was traveling southbound.
Individual Dies In Minivan After Colliding With Tow Truck That Was Pushed Into Oncoming Traffic
Tragically, one of the individuals inside the minivan suffered severe injuries and succumbed to them at the scene. The loss of life was devastating for all involved.
Emergency responders promptly arrived at the crash site and transported four other individuals, who sustained unspecified injuries, to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
Aliso Viejo Resident Mark Shoemate Identified As Driver Responsible For DUI Accident
Mark Shoemate, a 33-year-old resident of Aliso Viejo, was identified as the driver responsible for striking the tow truck. Law enforcement officers subsequently took him into custody, suspecting him of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.
