Bicyclist Dies after Struck by Train on E. Main Street in Turlock, CA

Turlock, CA (April 5, 2023) – A tragic accident occurred in Turlock, California on April 5th when a man in his 50s was killed after colliding with a train while riding his bicycle on the railroad tracks. According to the Turlock Police Department, the accident occurred on East Main Street, where the victim attempted to cross the tracks while the railroad arms were still down. Unfortunately, a northbound train struck the man from behind, causing severe injuries. The deceased was identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office as Jose Abel Rodriguez, 56, of Turlock.

The first responders who arrived at the scene rushed Rodriguez to a nearby hospital, but sadly he passed away due to the severity of his injuries.

In the aftermath of the accident, several intersections in the area were temporarily closed to traffic as law enforcement officials gathered evidence and processed the scene. The Turlock Police Department has also launched an investigation into the incident, and they are currently urging anyone with information about the accident to come forward.

Officer Meraz, the lead investigator on the case, can be reached at 209-668-5550 ext. 6759. Authorities are hoping that anyone who witnessed the accident or has any knowledge of the circumstances leading up to it will reach out to them to assist in the investigation.

Bicycle Safety

While this particular accident was tragic and has left family and friends mourning the loss of their loved one, it is unfortunately not an isolated incident. According to the Federal Railroad Administration, there were 2,139 railroad crossing accidents in the United States in 2020, resulting in 819 injuries and 182 fatalities. These figures underscore the importance of staying vigilant when crossing railroad tracks and obeying all safety signals and warnings.

In Turlock, the city’s police department has long been committed to promoting public safety and awareness around railroad crossings. They have previously conducted outreach programs and campaigns to educate the public on the dangers of crossing the tracks when the arms are down or attempting to beat an oncoming train.

As the investigation into the accident continues, the Turlock Police Department is urging all residents to remain cautious and vigilant when crossing railroad tracks. This includes waiting patiently for crossing arms to lift, avoiding distractions like phones or headphones, and never attempting to cross the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

The city’s police department also reminds residents that if they witness a railroad crossing violation or any other suspicious activity near the tracks, they should contact local law enforcement immediately. By working together and remaining vigilant, we can help prevent tragedies like this from occurring in the future.
