Two Small Planes Collide at Airport, Killing Two In Watsonville, CA
WATSONVILLE, CA (August 19, 2022) – Late in the afternoon on Thursday in Watsonville, a crash involving two small planes at Watsonville Municipal Airport killed two people. The August 18 crash occurred roughly 200 feet in the air.
The time was a little before 3:00 p.m., authorities said.
Reports say two small planes–described as a twin-engine Cessna 340 and a single-engine Cessna 152–were attempting to land at the airport, which does not have a control tower. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the planes were on their final approaches to the airport.
A person who witnessed the crash was reported to have said the planes collided roughly 200 feet in the air.
Responders found two people died in the crash. Their identities have not been reported.
It is not clear if the third person survived the crash.
The single-engine was carrying only a pilot. The twin-engine had a pilot and a passenger aboard. Reports do not say which plane or planes the each person who died had been traveling in.
A building at the airport was also damaged in the crash, according to reports.
Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are working to understand the crash, and why it happened.
