Flying Tire Strikes and Kills Passenger in Riverside on 91 Freeway
RIVERSIDE, CA (April 28, 2021) – Late in the afternoon on Sunday in Riverside, a tire that flew off a vehicle struck another vehicle, killing a passenger. The April 25 incident occurred on the 91 Freeway close to Lincoln Avenue.
The time was roughly a little after 5:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A vehicle–described as a Ford Econoline van–had been traveling east on the freeway. The wheel on the left side of the front of the van came loose and flew off. The flying tire went over the divider in the center of the roadway, and smashed through the windshield of a vehicle, described as a Porsche 911.
A passenger who had been seated in the front of the Porsche was struck by the tire. Responders arrived and transported the person to a hospital in the area.
He was pronounced deceased in the hospital. His identity–including name, age, and city of residence–has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Porsche was uninjured in the crash, according to reports. The identity of the driver has not been reported.
The identity of the person who had been driving the van has also not been reported.
