Wheel Flies Off Pickup Truck on SR-78 in San Marcos; Hits Patrol Car, and Second Vehicle
SAN MARCOS, CA (January 25, 2021) – A wheel flew off a vehicle in San Marcos on Saturday, which struck a patrol car and injured an officer. A second vehicle was also struck by the wheel. The January 23 incident occurred on State Route 78, to the east of Twin Oaks Valley Road.
The time was roughly midday, according to Juan Escobar. Escobar is with the California Highway Patrol.
A vehicle–described as a Chevrolet pickup truck–had been traveling on SR-78 and heading west. The rear wheel on the left side of the truck came off, for reasons that are not known, and traveled over the center of the roadway and into the lanes of opposing traffic.
The wheel hit an Escondido Police patrol vehicle–described as a Ford Explorer–which had been heading east. The windshield and the roof of the patrol vehicle were damaged, reports say.
The loose wheel traveled away and hit a Chevrolet Silverado, which had also been traveling on the eastbound side of the road, behind the patrol vehicle.
The officer suffered injuries that were described as minor, reports say. The officer has not been identified.
The person who had been driving the Silverado was identified as a resident of Escondido, 22 years old. His name has not been reported. Reports do not say if he was hurt in the incident.
The driver of the pickup that lost the wheel was identified as a resident of Vista, 40 years old. Her name has not been reported. It is also not known if she was hurt in the incident.
