Crash on I-5 Ramp in Oceanside Kills Passenger; Driver Suspected of DUI
OCEANSIDE, CA (December 18, 2020) – On Tuesday night in Oceanside, a passenger in a vehicle driven by a man suspected of DUI was killed in a crash. The December 15 incident occurred on the ramp that transitions from I-5 northbound to State Route 76.
The time was roughly 9:50 p.m., according to Mark Latulippe. Latulippe is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
The vehicle–described as a Honda Accord–is alleged to have been going at a fast speed, reports say, when it went into the transition ramp. The Honda traveled to the left and hit an embankment. It rolled over in the crash.
A passenger, who had not been wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the back seat. The vehicle landed upside down on the ramp in the left lane.
Responders transported the passenger by airlift to La Jolla’s Scripps Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital.
He was identified as a resident of Oceanside, 22 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
The driver, and a person who had been traveling as a passenger in the front, suffered injuries that were described as minor.
The front-seat passenger was identified as a resident of Carlsbad, 23 years old. His name has not been reported.
Authorities arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI. He was identified as Tyler James Cochran, a resident of Vista, 25 years old. Reports say he faces charges for manslaughter and felony DUI.
Investigators are working on the incident.
