12 Year Old Boy Struck and Killed by Suspected DUI Driver in Costa Mesa
COSTA MESA, CA (December 8, 2020) – Noel Bascon, a 12 year old boy, was struck and killed in Costa Mesa late Sunday afternoon by a driver suspected of DUI. The December 6 incident occurred at Arlington Drive and Junipero Drive.
The time was roughly 5:55 p.m., according to Costa Mesa Police.
The boy and his father had been riding bicycles, and they went into a crosswalk. A vehicle–described as a pickup truck–that had been eastbound on Arlington Drive is alleged to have gone through a stop sign without stopping.
The pickup truck hit the boy, who was thrown and came down feet from from the place of impact, according to authorities.
A Good Samaritan performed CPR on Noel Bascon until responders arrived, reports say. Responders transported the boy to a local hospital. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital.
The two occupants of the pickup stayed at the incident site. The driver was identified as Richard Lavalle, a resident of Long Beach, 59 years old.
Police arrested Lavalle on suspicion of DUI, murder, and a parole violation, reports say.
The passenger in the pickup truck was identified as Lee Anna Diaz Murphy, a resident of Artesia, 56 years old.
Police arrested Murphy on suspicion of possession of controlled substances, and possession of unlawful paraphernalia, according to reports.
