15 Year Old Boy Seriously Injured by Hit-and-run Driver in Hawthorne
HAWTHORNE, CA (October 6, 2020) – Jose Luis Garcia was struck and seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver in Hawthorne on Monday morning. The October 5 incident occurred where Rosecrans Avenue and Doty Avenue intersect.
The time was a little before 7:30 a.m., according to Hawthorne Police.
Garcia had been accompanying his mother, who was on foot, while he road a bicycle, reports say. The boy’s mother–identified as Florencia Lopez–is reported to have seen a vehicle approach that had a red light.
The vehicle went through the red light at a fast speed, and struck Garcia. The driver did not stop to help, but fled the crash site.
Responders arrived and transported Garcia to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. He is reported to have suffered a major injury to his head, and a broken arm, broken leg, and broken ankles and feet.
Garcia is 15 years old. According to Pedro Mambo, who is an officer with Hawthorne Police, authorities believe Garcia will survive his injuries.
Video captured by a surveillance camera recorded a four-door sedan, white in color that was involved in the crash. The vehicle may be a Toyota Camry or Toyota Corolla.
Investigators are searching for the vehicle involved, and the suspected hit-and-run driver. If anyone has information regarding the incident, the person can contact Lt. Colquette. The number is 310-349-2703.
