Carlos Romo Identified as Pedestrian Killed on Border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (August 10, 2020) – Carlos Romo was identified by authorities as the pedestrian who was struck and killed on the border of Newport Beach and Costa Mesa on Friday night. The August 7 incident occurred in the area where Irvine Avenue and 17th Street intersect.
The time was roughly 8:34 p.m., according to Kelly Keyes. Keyes is a deputy coroner for Orange County.
A vehicle–which has not been described–struck Romo as he walked at the intersection. It is not clear from reports where Romo had been walking, and what line of travel the vehicle had been taking prior to the incident.
Responders arrived and transported Romo to Orange County Global Medical Center. He was pronounced deceased in the hospital. Romo was 77 years old, and a resident of Newport Beach.
The person who had been driving the vehicle remained at the incident site and cooperated with investigators, according to Mike Manson. Manson is a sergeant with Costa Mesa Police.
The identity of the driver, including name, age, gender, and city of residence, has not been reported. Investigators are working to understand why the crash happened.
