Woman Struck by Light Pole in San Diego After Driver Crashes into It; DUI Suspected
SAN DIEGO, CA (April 6, 2020) – A woman was injured in San Diego on Thursday night when a vehicle crashed into a light pole and it fell over, striking her. The April 2 incident occurred on Genesee Avenue in the 4800 block, close to Clairemont Mesa Boulevard and to the south of it.
The time was roughly 3:35 p.m., Robert Heims said. Heims is an officer with San Diego Police.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Chevrolet Silverado—had been traveling north on Genesee Avenue, and the vehicle swerved and hit the median in the center of the road. The vehicle then traveled toward the right and it overturned, and smashed into a light pole.
The impact sent the light pole down, and it hit a pedestrian who was on the sidewalk.
Responders arrived and transported the victim to a hospital. She suffered injuries that included a gash in her head. According to Heims, her injuries were not life threatening.
She was identified only as 68 years old. Her name and city of resident have not been reported.
The person who had been driving the truck, and a passenger, ran from it and fled the scene after the crash.
Responders located and transported the passenger to a hospital. He suffered injuries that were described as not life threatening, which included the skin ripped from his elbow to wrist. The passenger was identified as 25 years old. His name and city of residence have not been reported.
Authorities found and arrested the driver on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and DUI. He was identified as Pedro Matias-Perez.
The light pole that was struck fell onto a home’s roof located close to where Sauk Avenue and Genesee Avenue intersect. It is not known if the home was damaged. The owners of the home have not been identified.
Investigators are continuing their work to gather information and details regarding the crash.
