Driver Fleeing Traffic Stop in San Diego Crashes in Mid-City, Causing Damage
SAN DIEGO, CA (February 13, 2020) – Early in the morning on Wednesday, a driver who was fleeing a traffic stop in San Diego led police on a chase before crashing. The February 12 incident occurred in the area of Mid-City.
Reports say the incident began on Euclid Avenue close to the 100 block, when officers with San Diego Police tried to pull a vehicle over for a traffic stop a little before 2:00 a.m. According to reports, officers had seen a handgun thrown out of the vehicle—described as a Toyota Corolla.
The driver of the Toyota drove away at a fast speed, and officers pursued. The Toyota drove from State Route 94 westbound to I-805 northbound. According to reports, the vehicle hit over 90 miles per hour during the chase.
The Toyota left the freeway at the University Avenue exit and turned right onto 39th Street. While on 39th Street, the Toyota smashed into as many as two vehicles that had been parked.
Two men—described as a driver and a passenger—fled from the wrecked vehicle on foot. Two women who were passengers remained in the Toyota’s rear seat. Their identities have not been reported.
Officers located the men and arrested them. The charges they face have not been reported. Their identities have also not been reported.
It is not known from reports if anyone was hurt in the crash. The parked vehicles that were struck have not been described, and their owners have not been identified.
Investigators are continuing to collect information and evidence regarding the incident.
