Sheriff’s Detective Struck and Killed in Los Angeles’ Valley Village
LOS ANGELES, CA (January 1, 2020) – Amber Joy Leist, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s detective, was hit and killed on Sunday in Los Angeles’ Valley Village area while she was off-duty. The January 12 incident occurred where Whitsett Avenue and Riverside Drive intersect.
The time was roughly 11:05 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department said.
Reports say Leist had been driving near the intersection and saw two people walking across the road within a crosswalk. One person, described as older, fell while walking.
According to reports, Leist stopped and exited her vehicle and went to help the person. As she was going back to her car, a vehicle which had been heading east on Riverside Drive on a green light hit her, according to Alex Villanueva. Villaneuva is the sheriff.
Responders arrived and transported Leist to the hospital. She died from her injuries. Leist was 41 years old, and worked for the department’s West Hollywood station for 12 years.
The person who had been driving the vehicle stayed at the incident site and cooperated with the investigation. The identity of the driver has not been reported.
Investigators are continuing to gather details and information regarding the incident, which was described as an accident.
