Crash in Colton on I-10 Involving Driver Suspected of DUI Kills Man
COLTON, CA (September 4, 2019) – On Monday morning, a crash on I-10 in Colton involving a driver suspected of DUI killed a man. The September 2 incident occurred on the westbound side of the freeway, near Mount Vernon Avenue and to the west of it.
The time was roughly 7:35 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Saturn—had been stopped in the number 4 lane of the freeway. Another vehicle—described as a Jeep Wrangler—which had been going at a speed of approximately 55 miles per hour, struck the rear of the Saturn. The impact sent the Jeep rolling over.
The person who had been the driver of the Saturn suffered injuries that were described as major. Responders transported him to a local hospital. The victim died in the hospital. He was identified only as a resident of Los Angeles, 62 years old. His name has not been reported.
The person who had been driving the Jeep suffered injuries that were described as minor. He was identified as Jeffrey Ornelas, Jr., 30 years old and a resident of Colton.
Ornelas was arrested on suspicion driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.
