Crash on I-15 in Fallbrook Kills Teen Driver; Injures Passenger
FALLBROOK, CA (July 23, 2019) – A crash on I-15 on Sunday afternoon in Fallbrook killed the teenaged driver involved, and injured a passenger. The July 21 incident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway, close to Pala Mesa Drive and state Route 76, and to the north of it.
The time was roughly 12:40 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
Reports say a vehicle, described as Mercury Sable, had been traveling in the freeway’s number one lane in traffic that was moving without impediments. For reasons that are not known, the driver lost control, and the vehicle abruptly swerved to the right.
The Mercury spun out, and went off the freeway. It traveled down the dirt embankment, according to Mark Latulippe. Latulippe is an officer with the California Highway Patrol.
The Mercury hit a tree that is growing next to the freeway, with the impact having occurred on the driver’s side.
Responders arrived and pronounced the driver deceased at the accident site. He was 19 years old and a resident of Victorville.
Responders transported the passenger—identified as a man 23 years old and a resident of Victorville—by airlift to Palomar Hospital. The victim suffered injuries that were described as moderate, according to John Choi. Choi is a public information officer with North County Fire Protection District. The victim’s name has not been reported.
Investigators are working on understanding the circumstances that related the incident. They are continuing to gather information and details.
