Vehicle Strikes San Diego Police Patrol Car on I-5 Near Palm City
SAN DIEGO, CA (May 30, 2019) – A driver traveling on I-5 crashed into a San Diego Police patrol vehicle in the evening on Tuesday in the South Bay area. The May 28 incident occurred in the lanes of the freeway that head north, close to Palm Avenue and to the north of it in the vicinity of Palm City.
The time was roughly a bit before 10:00 p.m.
Reports say a vehicle—described as a Volkswagen Jetta—had been heading north, and clipped the back end of a San Diego Police patrol vehicle that had been parked on the freeway’s shoulder. The impact of the collision sent the Volkswagen out of the driver’s control, and it hit the railing along the shoulder.
According to reports, the driver—identified only as a woman—was not hurt in the incident. The identity of the driver, including her name, age, and city of residence, has not been reported.
It is not clear if anyone else was injured in the incident, and if anyone had been traveling as a passenger in the vehicle with the woman. Reports do not say if anyone was in the police vehicle, or outside of it, when the crash occurred.
The driver was given a field sobriety test, reports say, and was arrested on suspicion of DUI. Investigators are continuing to work on understanding the details of the incident and exploring the information.
