Stolen Vehicle Suspect Involved in Crashes in San Fernando Valley is Pursued by Civilian

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, CA (March 5, 2019) – A stolen vehicle suspect, who was involved in at least two collisions on Monday night in the San Fernando Valley, was pursued by a civilian driver. Police took both drivers into custody.

The March 4 incident unfolded in Pacoima, where the vehicle—described as an older sedan—left the 118 Freeway, exiting onto San Fernando Road. The time was roughly 8:30 p.m.

Tony Im, who is an officer with the Los Angeles Police Department, said the vehicle had been stolen. The sedan, described as perhaps a 1980s or 1990s Toyota, made its way through city streets, passing through a neighborhood of residences and then entering areas where businesses are located.

In trying to evade authorities, the suspect driver at times drove on the wrong side of the street. The stolen vehicle crashed into another vehicle, and continued traveling. Reports say law enforcement pursued the stolen vehicle in Van Nuys, Northridge, North Hills, and Reseda until roughly 8:50 p.m. At that point, the Los Angeles Police Department stopped pursuing the stolen vehicle from the ground, and kept an eye on it from the air.

In the area of North Hills, the stolen vehicle crashed a vehicle described as a minivan. Despite deploying a spike strip, police were not able to stop the suspect’s travel. Reports say the suspect driver was talking to authorities on a cell phone to work out details to surrender.

The suspect driver was said to have stopped to speak to pedestrians, and obtained a cigarette from one of them close to where Roscoe Boulevard and Sepulveda Boulevard intersect. After the suspect driver cut off a vehicle—described as a pickup truck—the pickup began pursuing.

Reports say that police resumed pursuing the suspect, and despite having their lights lit, neither the suspect driver nor the driver of the pickup truck would pull over. The stolen car was eventually blocked by the pickup truck, and police arrested the suspect driver.

According to reports, the person who had been driving the pickup truck started to flee while police were arresting the suspect driver. After police pursued the pickup driver with lights lit, the pickup driver stopped. Reports say police handcuffed both drivers, and the pickup driver was later released. No details have been reported on the identities of the drivers, or of the victims who were involved in collisions with the suspect driver of the stolen vehicle. It is not known from reports if anyone was injured. Investigators are looking into the details.
